Netflix goes on the Bollywood offensive. Now the streaming giant presented its program for 2024 at a gala event in Mumbai. According to a report by the “Hollywood Reporter”, Netflix wants to further expand in the Indian market. The program package for the current year includes eight feature films and 14 series from various genres.
The program presentation in Mumbai under the title “Next on Netflix: Blockbuster Entertainment Ka Next Level” was moderated by Monika Shergill, Vice President Content for Netflix India. “2023 was our most successful year. Our customers have given a clear vote: they love stories from India – and around the world – across all genres and emotions,” said Shergill. “In 2024, we want to take the entertainment factor for our viewers to the next level. The biggest names and freshest voices in the Indian entertainment industry bring their most extraordinary films, series and documentaries to Netflix. And we can’t wait for you you see.”
The 2024 program will be led by “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar”, the streaming series debut of Bollywood blockbuster filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali (61). The eight-part series is an epic drama. It describes the lives of Tawaif entertainers in the red light district of Lahore during the Indian independence movement.
Netflix also unveiled the next three projects under its partnership with hit studio Yash Raj Films. The series “Mandala Murders” is a crime thriller “in which perpetrators, victims, survivors and investigators are intricately connected,” according to Netflix. Another top title is “IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack.” The film recreates the longest plane hijacking in Indian history. With its program, Netflix also wants to build on Netflix’s early successes with Indian documentaries. Documentaries like “The Great Indian Kapil Show” with India’s “King of Comedy” Kapil Sharma in the lead role stand out here.
