It has recently become quite quiet about part three of the mega-success “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. Now, however, the production company Focus Features and the film studio Universal Pictures have announced, according to the industry website “The Hollywood Reporter”, that fans of the first two parts should mark September of this year in their calendars. September 8 was chosen as the start date in the USA. It’s quite possible (but not yet confirmed) that the strip in this country could start on Thursday in cinemas the day before.

The window after the summer blockbusters has established itself according to the report for romantic comedies of the “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” brand. For example, Universal had good experiences last year with “Ticket to Paradise”. The strip with George Clooney (61) and Julia Roberts (55) also started in Germany before the US release.

In a short clip, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” leading actress, screenwriter and director Nia Vardalos (60) announced in the middle of last year that filming had just officially started in Athens, Greece.

Part three will also revolve around the trials and tribulations of love in the Portokalos family and married Ian Miller (“Sex and the City” star John Corbett, 61). Unfortunately, one star of the first two parts was no longer able to take part: actor Michael Constantine, who played family patriarch Gus Portokalos, died in August 2021 at the age of 94.

Before his death, he confided in Vardalos that he could no longer participate in the planned third part: “It was his wish that we continue. I wrote the screenplay in a way that honors Michael’s decision and will always appreciate his last message to me : he hopes we can start shooting soon.” Vardalos wrote this at the end of September 2021 for a joint picture with her co-stars Lainie Kazan (82), Louis Mandylor (56) and Gia Carides (58). At that time she also announced that the script was already finished.

The first part about the very traditional Greek family Portokalos, who lives in Chicago, blossomed into a surprising blockbuster in 2002. With a budget of just $5 million, the independent flick grossed an incredible $368 million. Nevertheless, it took until 2016 before the sequel found its way to the cinema. However, despite the return of all the characters she loved, she was unable to continue the immense commercial success of her predecessor.
