Because of the ongoing Russian war of aggression, Ukraine held the preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in a Kiev subway station that had been converted into a bomb shelter.
According to the ESC’s official website, the TVORCHI group won the competition. TVORCHI is an electropop duo consisting of Andriy Guzuljak and singer Jefferey Kenny, formed in Ternopil in 2018. The two musicians met while studying pharmacy in the western Ukrainian city. Victory in the ESC preliminary round late on Saturday evening is her biggest success to date.
In 2022, the Kalush Orchestra from Ukraine won the Eurovision Song Contest. Accordingly, Kyiv would have actually had the broadcasting rights for the ESC final next year. However, due to security concerns caused by the Russian war of aggression, the final was moved to Great Britain.
The preliminary decision in Kyiv was also overshadowed by Russian attacks. Russian rocket attacks paralyzed the Ukrainian capital’s electricity, water and heat supplies on Friday.
