Joe Biden (80) becomes King Charles III. (74) visit Windsor. The US President is in Europe for the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, which takes place on July 11-12, and for a conference in Finland. In Great Britain he will meet Prime Minister Rishi Sunak (43) alongside Charles.
Biden last came to London for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022) last year. He did not attend the coronation of Charles III. part. First Lady Jill Biden (72) was present at the ceremony in May instead. Charles and Biden are now coming together at one of Charles’ residences. Buckingham Palace said, according to People magazine, “The King will meet the President of the United States at Windsor Castle on Monday, July 10.”
A White House statement said President Biden will travel to London to meet with King Charles III. and to meet Prime Minister Rishi Sunak “to further strengthen the close ties between our nations”.
The visit to Windsor Castle will be Biden’s second meeting with a reigning British monarch during his presidency. There he met with Queen Elizabeth II in June 2021, a few months after taking office. The monarch, who ascended the throne in 1952 and died in September 2022, has spoken to all American presidents since Harry S. Truman (1884- 1972), except for Lyndon B. Johnson (1908-1973), speaking personally.
Among other things, King Charles and Joe Biden met in November 2021. The 26th UN Climate Change Conference was taking place in Glasgow, Scotland, and the then British heir to the throne and the US President are said to have exchanged views on the sidelines of the event.
