Kim Kardashian (42) spoke openly on the podcast “Angie Martinez IRL” about raising her children together with ex-husband Kanye West (45). The two have been officially divorced since November and share custody of daughters North, 9, and Chicago, 4, and sons Saint, 7, and Psalm, 3. “I had the best dad and I only have the best memories of it. And I want the same for my kids,” Kardashian explained in the interview, admitting tearfully, “Co-parenting is freaking hard.”
According to her own statement, the entrepreneur tries to shield her children from the public. “If they don’t know what’s being said or what’s going on in the world, why would I ever want to pass that energy on to them? This is heavy adult fare. They’re not ready to deal with it.” And if they are, “we will have these conversations and I will be prepared, but until then I will do everything I can to keep her life as normal as possible,” added the 42-year-old.
When she drives her kids to school and “they want to hear their dad’s music – no matter what we’re going through – I have to put a smile on my face and turn his music up and sing along with my kids,” Kardashian continued. “I pretend everything is fine and as soon as I put her down I can cry.” Kardashian posted a series of pictures with her children on Instagram for Christmas without her ex-husband.
Kardashian and West had been together since 2012 and wed in May 2014. Their marriage hit a snag at the height of West’s public outbursts in 2020 after he launched a controversial run for US President and on the campaign trail and on Twitter had revealed very personal details about his family and his marriage. Back then, in a rare public statement, Kardashian addressed his diagnosis of bipolar disorder, asking fans for “sympathy” and admitting he was in a “complicated and painful” situation. In February 2021, Kardashian filed for divorce from West after nearly seven years of marriage.
