US singer Katy Perry (38) regrets not working with Billie Eilish (21) when she had the chance. In a TikTok video posted by 102.7 KIIS FM on Friday, the ‘American Idol’ judge told the audience at a small concert that she was once asked to work on Eilish’s debut single ‘Ocean Eyes’ – before it won a Grammy won.
While it’s not clear who Perry is referring to, she says in the clip that someone “emailed me once and said, ‘Hey, check out this new artist. I’d love to meet her work because she worked with me for Unsub [Records].” But: “It was a song called ‘Ocean Eyes,’ and it was just a blonde girl,” Perry continued. “And I was like, ‘phew, boring’.”
Rolling her eyes, she admitted, “Big mistake. Huge mistake.” Then she joked, “Don’t let that appear on the internet.” US singer Billie Eilish rose to fame with ‘Ocean Eyes’ in 2015 and has since become one of the biggest names in the industry. She has won seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar for Best Original Song.
The two musicians have since become friends, as seen in Eilish’s 2021 documentary Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry, when Perry introduced herself and then-fiancé Orlando Bloom, 46, to the young singer, who wrote the “curse of the Caribbean” actor initially did not recognize. “My fiancé, who doesn’t listen to modern music, just plays you in the car,” Perry told Eilish when they met backstage at the Coachella festival. Bloom then hugged Eilish and said, “I’m so proud of you.” “Congratulations, I’m so proud of you,” Perry shared, before giving her some sweet advice. “It’s going to be wild for ten years. If you want to talk… because it’s a crazy ride.”
After the couple left, Eilish asked her brother, music producer Finneas O’Connell, 25, who Bloom was. Finneas reminded her of Bloom’s roles, particularly as Will Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean. – “That guy?! That was him?!”, she said. “Never! Bring him back. I want to see him again. He kissed me on the cheek. I didn’t know it was him. I thought it was just some guy Katy Perry met.” Before Eilish took the stage, Bloom actually came back and gave the singer a long and warm hug. “This is the universe that embraces you. Giving you lots of love and life right now,” the actor told her.
