The first glimpses of the new film “I Am Ruth” with Kate Winslet (47) and her daughter Mia Threapleton (22) are here. In a picture published by the responsible broadcaster Channel 4, the actress hugs her daughter, both of whom look very sad.
Winslet and Threapleton play a fictional family in the special, which will air on Channel 4 in the UK later this winter. Winslet plays Ruth, the eponymous mother, who worries about her daughter, who feels pressured by social media and is becoming increasingly withdrawn.
The drama is part of the series ‘I Am’, an anthology series in which each episode focuses on a woman. Winslet described “her” episode as “a story for our time about the endemic mental health crisis afflicting young people,” according to the press release. Speaking about her work on the series and working with director Dominic Savage (59), she said: “The actors become those roles and there’s just no room for pretense.”
For Threapleton, whose father is director Jim Threapleton (49), it is not the first role. She has previously starred in the Irish thriller Shadows and the series Dangerous Liaisons. As Winslet revealed on TV last year’s ‘Lorraine’, her daughter’s own last name is particularly important to her in her own career: “The people who cast her had no idea that she was my daughter. Of course it was very important to their self-esteem.”
