Dame Julie Andrews (87) thinks it is unlikely that she will be seen again as Clarisse Renaldi, the queen and regent of Genovia, in the planned Disney sequel “Princess Diaries 3”. “I think we know it probably won’t be possible,” Andrews told Access Hollywood in an interview. It was talked about shortly after the release of part two, “but how many years have passed since then,” says Andrews. “And I’m so much older and Annie the princess or queen is so much older,” argued the 87-year-old. “I’m not sure where that would lead or run.”
Earlier this year, Anne Hathaway (40) confirmed her interest in a third “Princess Diaries” film and pushed for Andrews’ return. “I’m committed to it,” she told “Entertainment Tonight”. “If there’s any way we can get Julie Andrews involved, we’ll work it out.”
Andrews, now 87, hasn’t appeared in a movie since Dwayne Johnson’s 2010 comedy The Tooth Fairy. In addition to her Netflix series “Julie’s Theater School” (2017), Andrews is limited to speaking roles. For example, she can be heard as Lady Whistledown in the original English version of the Netflix hit series “Bridgerton”.
The actress had her big breakthrough with the classic film “Mary Poppins” in 1964. The role of the magical nanny earned her the Oscar for best actress.
The coming-of-age comedy “The Princess Diaries” starring Andrews and Hathaway was released in 2001 and directed by Garry Marshall (1934-2016). Hathaway plays Mia Thermopolis, a teenager from San Francisco who one day discovers that she is the heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Genovia. Andrews plays her grandmother, the queen and regent of Genovia. But despite all the joy, Mia quickly realizes that royal life has its pitfalls. Andrews and Hathaway reprized their roles in the 2004 sequel Princess Diaries 2. This time, Mia is supposed to take over the crown from the queen. However, a suitable husband must first be found.
Details of the third film are not yet known. But the story should continue with part two, reports “The Hollywood Reporter”, citing industry circles. Aadrita Mukerji (“Reacher”) is set to write the script.
