This news comes as a surprise. As a spokesman for Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan confirmed to “People” magazine, the couple had their daughter Lilibet Diana baptized last Friday.
“I can confirm that Princess Lilibet Diana was christened by Archbishop of Los Angeles Rev. John Taylor on Friday March 3,” the official said. The statement is interesting in that Lilibet Diana gets the title princess in it.
“The title follows the precedent set by the patent issued by George V in 1917, which conferred the title of prince or princess on male grandchildren of the monarch. They have been entitled to use that title since the king’s accession. The Sussexes have now decided to do so,” explains journalist Rebecca English on Twitter.
It was not yet clear if Archie and Lilibet would get the titles. They are still listed as Master and Miss on the Royal Family’s website, so it’s quite possible that the page will be updated soon.
Also interesting is a tweet from author Omid Scobie, who is said to be close to the Sussexes. On the short message service he wrote, both King Charles III. and Queen Consort Camilla, as well as William and Kate, were invited to the christening of Lilibet but did not travel to California.
Lilibet Diana’s godfather is US actor Tyler Perry. He has been close to the Sussexes since he offered them his California estate when they no longer felt safe in Canada. The two did not say who became the godmother of Meghan and Harry’s daughter.
