Of course, court cases are always a serious matter – in the USA, where they are carried out much more publicly than in Germany, they sometimes develop into real media events. Especially when celebrities have to answer questions and thus give an insight into their lives that one would probably never have gotten in any other way. This was already experienced in an ugly way when Johnny Depp and Amber Heard argued in court – the trial of Gwyneth Paltrow, who is said to have rammed a man while skiing, was much more peaceful.
The 76-year-old optometrist said he suffered multiple broken ribs and irreversible brain damage, which severely curtailed his life and changed it forever. However, Paltrow’s lawyers were able to show that after the accident he had traveled happily around the world, scaled pyramids and zip-lined in Peru, toured Europe several times and apparently did not feel limited by any physical ailments. Paltrow won the lawsuit, Sanderson now has to pay her legal fees.
More interesting than the procedure itself, however, were the small details, which caused amusement and subtle jokes, especially on Twitter. “Gwyneth is obviously innocent, but that’s no reason to end the trial now!” joked one user, who was amused by the trial. “Somebody’s partying with TWO servings of bone broth tonight,” quipped another, referring to the viral video from a few weeks ago of Paltrow explaining her extremely meager eating plan.
Another even suspected that Donald Trump would soon ask the actress for tips on how to win a lawsuit – after all, he could soon be in court himself. Appropriately, someone posted a meme of the ex-president shouting at a young boy, “Do you have the number of Gwyneth Paltrow’s attorney?”
The fashion style of the actress was also often made fun of: Gwyneth Paltrow always looked dutifully underdressed, albeit in extremely expensive clothes. Several of these were from her own “GOOP” collection. A Twitter user commented: “Gwyneth Paltrow looks like she’s on trial in 1987 for putting a hitman on her husband.”
In general, many Twitter users seemed to wish for a cinematic implementation of the entertaining court drama, and have even given various actors the roles of lawyers and the like. “If Ryan Murphy (director of ‘Dahmer’ and ‘American Horror Story ed.’) makes the trial a thirteen-episode miniseries, please Gwyneth has to play the role of Gwyneth,” someone joked.
In addition to all the fun that the relatively harmless process gave many people, critical voices were also raised: court hearings should not be viewed as mere entertainment, it was said.
