Hamburg’s ballet director John Neumeier is following developments in the USA with great concern. “I see in my home country with Donald Trump how terrible, how bad it can go and how hypocritical and how limiting it is. And I’m simply against it,” Neumeier told the German Press Agency in Hamburg. He is “insanely afraid” that Donald Trump could be elected president again.
“The way he has set up the Supreme Court in his favor. That looks really bad,” said the American native, who has directed the Hamburg Ballet for 51 years and will celebrate his 85th birthday on February 24th.
Neumeier believes that the social climate is also beginning to change in Germany. “In our company and in our school, people from 33 different nations dance who work together in absolute peace,” said the ballet director.
This microcosm is, so to speak, a reflection of the society in which he wants to live. “And I would like to live in a country where this form of freedom exists.” That’s why he took part in the large demonstration against right-wing extremism in Hamburg at the end of January.
