In the hit series “Grey’s Anatomy”, Caterina Scorsone plays the neurosurgeon Dr. Amelia Shepherd, who regularly has to overcome professional and private hurdles. Now the 41-year-old was faced with an immense challenge in real life: the Canadian’s house burned down completely. Scorsone posted a photo on Instagram showing the ruins of her living room.
As she writes, the fire happened a few months ago. She was about to get her kids ready for bed in the bathroom when she noticed that “smoke was starting to rise through the cracks around the bathtub.” “By the time I looked down the hall, thick black smoke had already formed and was filling the entire house.” Scorsone reacted with quick-wittedness: she grabbed her three daughters and ran out of the house.
“That’s one thing about fires: they happen quickly,” she writes. They had little more than two minutes to flee the fire, which was spreading rapidly. “We escaped with less than our shoes on. But we got out. And I’m eternally grateful for that.” She could not save her four pets, three cats and a dog, of which she also shows photos in her Instagram post. “We’re still haunted by that loss, but we’re glad we got to love her at all.”
In addition, Scorsone would like to thank everyone who helped her and her children in the first emergency: the firefighters and police officers, her neighbors, other parents from her children’s school, her sisters and her colleagues from the “Grey’s Anatomy” set. “The only thing that matters is the community. Without it we wouldn’t be here and we are so grateful,” writes the actress.
Caterina Scorsone split from her husband Rob Giles in 2020 after eleven years of marriage. He is the father of her daughters Lucky, Pippa and Eliza. Six-year-old Pippa was born with trisomy 21. “My understanding of my role as a mother has completely changed, it has opened up,” the actress said in a 2019 interview.
