Royal fans all over the world were waiting for this news. After Buckingham Palace surprisingly announced on Monday that King Charles III. When he was diagnosed with cancer, the monarch himself remained silent for days. Now he is speaking out about his illness for the first time. But the message shared on social media is hardly about him.
Instead, Charles expresses one thing above all: gratitude. “I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the many messages of support and good wishes that I have received in the last few days,” he begins his statement. “Anyone affected by cancer knows that such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement.”
He also seems to see the positive side of his illness. He enthuses that he is delighted “how the news of my own diagnosis has helped to promote public understanding and shine a light on the work of all those organizations that support cancer patients and their families in the UK and around the world.” The photo posted on Instagram shows him visiting one of the organizations in question and exchanging ideas with the medical staff.
He has always valued the nurses and doctors, he emphasizes. “My lifelong admiration for her tireless care and commitment has only grown stronger through my own personal experiences.”
Until now, Charles had held back on the diagnosis. The cancer was discovered during a prostate operation; it is still not known exactly which form the king suffered from. So far, only the palace and the queen have commented publicly: her husband is doing extremely well given the circumstances, Camilla explained over the course of the week. She also mentioned that the news would touch him.
At the beginning of the week, there was great concern for Charles, especially when his son Prince Harry traveled from the USA specifically to visit the sick king. However, the palace has now assured that Charles will continue to take care of official business during his treatment, and some personal meetings have even been announced. He just wants to avoid public appearances until further notice, based on a doctor’s recommendation.
