Gary Oldman (65) has been working in the acting business for decades and has since impressed with outstanding performances in numerous roles – including classics such as “Léon – The Professional” or “The Fifth Element”. Younger film fans, meanwhile, fondly remember Oldman in the “Harry Potter” films, in which he appeared as Sirius Black. As the British actor now explains, he considers his portrayal of the magician to be “mediocre”. Oldman also explains his reason for this reserved self-assessment.
“I think my work in it is mediocre,” Oldman tells Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. “Gary…” Horowitz then interjects incredulously and the actor confirms: “No, I do.”
Oldman sees the reason for this in the fact that he had not read the books by the author J. K. Rowling (58) before he stood in front of the film camera for the first time as Sirius Black: “If I had perhaps read the books like Alan [Rickman], if I had If I had been one step ahead of everything, if I had known what was coming, I honestly think I would have played it differently.”
Oldman first appeared as Sirius Black in the 2004 film “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.” In a conversation with his actress colleague Drew Barrymore (48), he recently explained that “Harry Potter” and “Batman” saved him privately.
“I thank God for Harry Potter,” said the Brit in mid-December, recalling a divorce and custody dispute with his ex-wife Donya Fiorentino (56). According to him, because many productions were filmed in Hungary, Budapest and Australia at the time, he had to turn down a lot of work. The film rolls “saved” him because they allowed him to stay at home with his children and he did little work for “most of the money.”
