It’s been more than four years since the epic fantasy series “Game of Thrones” ended with season eight. Viewers and fans of the series have since expressed their dissatisfaction with the show’s final episodes – and series participants such as Emilia Clarke (played Daenerys Targaryen, 36) or Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister, 49) have sometimes been critical of the past the noticeable drop in quality at the end of the HBO show.

In a new interview with “The Times” actor Conleth Hill (58) hit the same note. From the start of the series to the penultimate episode of season eight, the Northern Irish actor embodied the character Varys, the master of the whisperers, in “Game of Thrones”.

The acclaimed actor said he was “frustrated” by the series’ ending, which he called “hasty”. “Up until the last two seasons, I had no complaints at all. I was just frustrated with the last two seasons because Varys wasn’t the omniscient character he used to be,” explains Hill.

His character Varys is burned alive by the dragon Drogon for treason in the penultimate episode of season eight, and Hill appears to have no idea why the previously well-informed spider couldn’t save her own life in this case.

“I felt like the last season was a bit rushed,” he continues in the interview. In fact, numerous viewers criticized the abridged final edition of the HBO series, which only had six episodes instead of the usual ten. A number of character developments that had previously taken place over a period of several episodes or even seasons seemed too forced here.

“I was heartbroken,” says actor Hill of the show’s ending, but adds that he’s fine now.
