Andreas Brehme (1960-2024) died on February 20, 2024 at the age of 63. This Tuesday (March 12th) the football world said goodbye to the 1990 world champion. As the “Bild” newspaper reported, among others, the former football player was buried in the Giesing district of Munich.
According to “Bild”, many companions were present at the memorial service for the 1990 world champion and final goalscorer, who scored the 1-0 winning goal with a penalty in the final. Rudi Völler (63), who became world champion with Brehme, is said to have given a farewell speech and stated, among other things: “Andi cannot be reduced to the penalty. As “RTL.de” reports, Lothar Matthäus (62) and Jürgen Klinsmann (59) as well as Pierre Littbarski (63) and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (68) also took part in Brehme’s farewell party. According to the “Bild” newspaper, Uli Hoeneß (72) and Michael Ballack (47) were also present.
According to consistent media reports, Brehme had suffered a cardiac arrest. In his long career as a player and coach he went through various positions. After starting at HSV Barmbek-Uhlenhorst, he eventually made it to today’s record champions FC Bayern Munich via 1. FC Saarbrücken and 1. FC Kaiserslautern. After trips to Italy (Inter Milan) and Spain (Real Zaragoza), he returned to Kaiserslautern in 1993 and continued until the end of his career. He made his debut as a coach there in 2000 before later coaching Unterhaching and VfB Stuttgart as an assistant coach.
