In contrast to the male national football team, which did not cover itself with glory at the World Cup in Qatar, the German women footballers made it to the final of the European Championship last year. In addition to Alexandra Popp (31), Giulia Gwinn (23), who now reviewed her eventful year 2022 in an interview with “Bild am Sonntag”, was one of the guarantors of success. A royal and a showmaster veteran had special roles.
Since the EM took place in England, Gwinn was allowed to briefly meet Prince William (40) and shake his hand at the award ceremony. But because of the 2-1 defeat in the final against hosts England, she couldn’t enjoy the moment – and hardly even remember it: “To be honest, I didn’t notice anything anymore.” It was too frustrating “walking through the trellis of winners. After that, people wrote to me about how cool it must have been to have met Prince William. I didn’t even know what to answer.”
A short time after the unfortunate defeat, Gwinn found herself with her teammate Popp on the sofa of “Wetten, dass…?” again. However, this turned out to be another thankless moment for the 23-year-old – the showmaster veteran Thomas Gottschalk (72) had renamed her “Giuliana” without further ado. Although it was “strange at first”, she is not resentful and instead takes it with humor: “Thomas Gottschalk gave me a new nickname. If someone wants to tease me now, I will be called Giuliana.”
Rather, the joy that the show took place in her hometown of Friedrichshafen prevailed. Accordingly, she can overlook Gottschalk’s little faux pas: “For me, Thomas Gottschalk is and will remain a TV legend.”
