The second episode of Duchess Meghan’s (41) Spotify podcast “Archetypes” was released on Tuesday (August 30). This time she has singer Mariah Carey (53) as a guest. Titled “The Duality of Diva,” the duo talked about the complexity of the term “diva” and the meaning of their skin colors.

The Duchess of Sussex later explains that she was inspired by the singer as a child because Carey is also of mixed heritage. Meghan thought, “Oh my god. Someone who looks like me. She’s mixed like me,” adding that she’s a fan of the star.

Carey hasn’t had it easy in life. The 53-year-old tells in the podcast that she moved more than a dozen times in her youth and grew up without a lot of money. With every new beginning, she had to struggle to adapt. “I didn’t fit in,” the singer said. “You know, there were either the black neighborhoods of the city or the neighborhoods my mom lived in that were more white. And I didn’t fit in anywhere.”

Duchess Meghan can understand that: “Because we’re light-skinned, you’re not treated like a black woman. You’re not treated like a white woman. You’re somewhere in between.” If there was a time in the 41-year-old’s life “when everything focused more on the color of my skin, it was only when I started dating my husband”. Then she only began to understand “what it’s like to be treated as a black woman,” says Meghan, referring to her relationship with Prince Harry (37). “Because up until then I had been treated like a woman of mixed race. That really changed then.”

Duchess Meghan’s podcast “Archetypes” has reached the top of the Spotify charts in several countries after the release of the first episode. In the first episode, tennis star Serena Williams (40) was a guest at Meghan’s studio. The two powerful women talked about prejudices that successful and ambitious women unfortunately still face. Author and actress Mindy Kaling (43) will be a guest next week.
