Before she became the wife of Prince Harry (38), Duchess Meghan (41) was known as an actress, particularly for her role in the popular legal series “Suits”. The USA Network show originally ran from 2011 to 2019, but as a licensed title, “Suits” has now set an impressive streaming record.
As the US market research company Nielsen reports, after the Netflix start of the series in the first full week of availability from June 26 to July 2, an incredible 3.14 billion minutes of “Suits” were streamed on TV sets in the USA . This also includes the streaming service Peacock, on which the show is also available.
According to the industry magazine “The Hollywood Reporter”, the lawyer show pulverized the previous record for a licensed title, which was set by the “Manifest” series in June 2021. 2.49 billion minutes of the show originally broadcast by NBC were streamed in a week.
The much newer series “The Witcher” (Netflix) and “The Bear: King of the Kitchen” (Hulu) also had nothing to do with this dominance in Nielsen’s “Top Ten Streaming List”. Henry Cavill’s (40) farewell performance as a witch was streamed for around 1.3 billion minutes (second place) during the survey period, while “The Bear” came in third place with 1.01 billion minutes streamed – and thus still the billion mark could crack.
On behalf of the major US streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney and Co., the company Nielsen independently collects call-up minutes for streaming shows viewed on TV sets. In consultation with the streaming services, these will only be announced after four weeks. Content streamed on computers or mobile devices does not count towards the ranking. In addition, only households in the USA are taken into account.
Nevertheless, Nielsen’s “Top Ten Streaming List” is one of the few independent sources for streaming usage. The services themselves – with the exception of Netflix – often only publish figures if they are successful. According to “Deadline”, the Netflix model is also not completely transparent.
