The dog, man’s friend. James Middleton lives by this motto. The Duchess’ brother lives at home in Bucklebury with his wife and Alizée Thevenet, whom he married in 2021, four dogs and, for a few weeks now, his son Inigo.
The first words about the offspring are: “He’s only been in our lives for a few weeks, but meeting our beautiful little boy was the best moment of my life.” To introduce his little offspring to the world, Middleton posted a carousel of pictures on Instagram. One picture shows the new father beaming with his son in a baby carrier tied around his stomach and his dogs in nature. Another the four dogs, two golden retrievers and two black cocker spaniels, looking into the stroller. The first picture has a very special meaning for the 36-year-old.
It shows his hand and that of the small infant. In the father’s hand a small amulet with a picture of a black cocker spaniel. This is Ella. Ella died at the beginning of 2023 after a short illness. Middleton loved this dog dearly and without Ella, baby Inigo would never have existed. Middelton wrote about the picture: “We’ve settled into our new life as parents and I’ve told him everything about Ella and how he wouldn’t be here today without her and that we miss her so much. The dogs have a fantastic little brother in the pack welcomed (although Inka must know that the teddy bears are not everything for her…)”.
The story behind it is heartbreaking, The Telegraph magazine wrote: “I have Ella to thank for introducing me to Alizée in 2018. Both of us (Ella and I) were at the South Kensington Club in Chelsea. Ella was lying under the Table. When I thought she might want some water, I trusted her to go to the water bowl on the other side of the terrace. However, she made her way to Alizée. Rather embarrassed, I went to “To apologize and get Ella back. But Alizée thought I was the waiter and ordered her drink while continuing to caress Ella, who was lying on her back at the time, drawing attention to herself.”
Without Ella’s contact, little Inigo would never have existed. The spaniel simply chose his new owner himself. James Middleton mourned the loss of his 15-year-old dog and even wrote an obituary for her in the Sunday Times.
But now, with the birth of his first son, joy prevails, he writes on his Instagram posting: “No matter how well prepared I thought I was… I was not prepared for the overwhelming emotion of meeting Inigo for the first time, and to the love for my beloved Alizée when we became three.”
