Hollywood director Roland Emmerich has announced the end of his career. In his next and last film, it should be about the fact that the world is falling apart because of environmental disasters, the 67-year-old told “Bild am Sonntag”.

“Because I ask myself whether there will come a time when people can no longer live in the country in which they were born – because of heat, because of water shortages, because of hunger,” he said. This will lead to a “migration of peoples” that will change a lot: “The system will no longer work if many millions of people suddenly travel to another country.”

The film is important to him: “In my opinion, the only way to wake people up is when they are terribly afraid of something.” Two to three years would pass before the shooting. What comes after that, he doesn’t know yet. Born in Stuttgart, Emmerich has been living in the USA for many years. Because of his disaster films like “Independence Day” or “The Patriot” he is sometimes called “Master of Disaster”. Last Monday he was the producer at the German premiere of the fantasy film “The Magic Flute – The Legacy of the Magic Flute” in Munich.
