In the course of his career, football star David Beckham (48) has shown himself to be extremely experimental when it comes to his hairstyles. In an interview with the British tabloid “The Sun”, Beckham now revealed that he is not embarrassed by most of his hairstyles – but he would no longer have one done today: “I’m often asked if I regret my hairstyles, and although I don’t regret any of them, I kind of regret the cornrows.”
In 2003, David Beckham was photographed meeting Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) with the small braided pigtails tight against the scalp. Before that he was on vacation with his family and friends in southern France – one of Victoria Beckham’s (49) friends who was there was a hairstylist.
“I asked her if she could do something with my hair and she said, ‘Do you want cornrows?’ and I said, ‘Yeah, I don’t know what that is, but yeah.’ It was painful, but I liked it,” Beckham says in the recent interview of how the hairstyle came about, which is now often perceived by the public as cultural appropriation when worn by white people. Originally, the cornrows come from the Afro-American culture.
The girlfriend braided his hair on Saturday and on Monday he flew to South Africa to play a football match with the English team. “I got to meet the great Nelson Mandela. And in the photo I have of it, I’m holding his hand with cornrows in my hair. That’s the only regret I have.”
