In the summer of 2022, Ghislaine Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The accomplice of the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has been found guilty on five of six counts, including “trafficking of a minor for abusive purposes”. Since then, Maxwell has been in a prison in Tallahassee, Florida.
From there she gave an interview in January this year, which was broadcast on the British program “Talk TV” with host Jeremy Kyle. In the conversation, the 61-year-old said, among other things, that she wishes she had never met Jeffrey Epstein and claimed that the famous photo of Prince Andrew and his alleged abuse victim Virginia Giuffre was fake. Maxwell also reported details of her everyday prison life, such as being woken up at six o’clock, being given muesli with a piece of fruit for breakfast and having to make her bed meticulously – like in the military, otherwise you would get into trouble.
There was trouble for Ghislaine Maxwell after the TV interview was broadcast. This is reported by the British newspaper “Daily Mail”. Accordingly, the prison management was angry that Maxwell used the opportunity to make video calls for an interview with journalists. Normally, only family members, close friends and lawyers are allowed to have these kinds of conversations, after they have entered a rigorously checked list. The interview for “Talk TV” was done by the American film producer Daphne Barak, who has known Maxwell for many years. Her older brother Kevin was also present. Ghislaine Maxwell was unaware that she was breaking the rules and protested her innocence.
Nevertheless, the prison authorities took action: according to the “Daily Mail”, about two weeks after the interview was broadcast, Maxwell was locked in a tiny single cell for 48 hours in a separate part of the prison. “It’s like a little box and you’re only allowed to shower once a day. There’s no contact with anyone, no privileges, they push your food through a slot,” the newspaper quoted an anonymous source as saying. Such cells are otherwise reserved for inmates who are at risk of suicide or who have been involved in a fight.
The prison has now launched an investigation into whether Ghislaine Maxwell’s TV interview violated the terms of her 20-year sentence. Maxwell denied that she benefited financially from the interview, and journalist Jeremy Kyle also said on the show: “How much did we pay Maxwell for this interview? Let me tell you categorically, not a damn penny and we wouldn’t either. “
