After the withdrawal of the titles of Prince Joachim of Denmark (53) and those of his family, the Danish royal family does not come to rest. Those involved have made public statements in the past few days, especially Queen Margrethe II of Denmark (82) was visibly trying to limit the damage. In an official statement, the monarch speaks of “violent reactions” that her decision caused. “Of course it affects me,” Margrethe continued.
However, she sees the stripping of the titles of her son and his family as “necessary” for the future of the monarchy. It is also always difficult to “find the right moment for difficult decisions […]”, says Margrethe.
“I made my decision as queen, mother and grandmother,” Margrethe continues, “but as a mother and grandmother, I underestimated how affected my youngest son and his family felt.” The monarch apologizes for this.
Margrethe’s son Prince Joachim, known as Count von Monpezat from the turn of the year, regretted to the Danish newspaper “BT.” that he had not spoken to his mother or the crown prince couple Frederik (54) and Mary of Denmark (50) since Margrethe’s decision. “That’s family too. Or whatever we want to call it,” said Joachim, who was visibly contrite and touched by the events.
Joachim’s wife Princess Marie (46) also said, according to “BT.”, that their children were “publicly displayed” at school. As parents, you didn’t have time to “prepare them for the change and for people’s reactions.”
On September 28th, Instagram announced that the titles and forms of address of many members of the Danish Royals would change. From January 1, 2023, Joachim and Marie will be called the Count and Countess of Monpezat. Joachim’s children Nikolai (23), Felix (20), Henrik (13) and Athena (10) are only addressed with “Excellence”.
