In a current hearing, the divorce drama between actor Kevin Costner and his estranged wife Christine Baumgartner is entering the next round. But this time the main question is whether Baumgartner understood the terms of the marriage contract when she signed it. This question fueled the recent dispute.
As the tabloid TMZ reports, Costner’s attorney Laura Wasser said in the current hearing: “Christine claims that she can neither admit nor deny that she understood the prenuptial contract because she (and apparently all her attorneys) understand the word ‘ ‘ do not understand.”
For the lawyer, there seemed to be indications in advance that Baumgartner might want to contest the marriage contract. As a result, Kevin’s attorneys, Christine’s attorneys, have asked if she “understood” the contents of what she signed — citing the legal validity of the signed marriage contract.
Wasser therefore asked the judge to get Baumgartner’s attorneys to answer the question. In addition, the dictionary meaning of the word “understood” for the opposite side was given.
However, Baumgartner’s legal counsel responded to the question with an objection: “This application is vague as to the scope and meaning of the term ‘understood’,” explains the opposing party. Baumgartner is not in a position to answer the question in the affirmative or in the negative, it is said.
For Baumgartner, the process could be an expensive game. According to TMZ, if the judge enforces the marriage contract at a further hearing, she will have to pay back the $1.5 million that Costner advanced. On top of that come the legal fees of her estranged husband. At previous hearings, the judge appeared to have indicated that he intends to enforce the marriage contract.
