Aphasia is an acquired speech disorder, most of which develops as a result of a stroke. As a result, those affected cannot speak properly, and reading and writing also causes them problems. However, they are not mentally impaired.
Around 30 to 40 percent of all those affected suffer from at least temporary aphasia. According to other data, about 44 percent of all symptoms disappear after six months and the speech function normalizes. Other patients, on the other hand, can speak very little, others even fall silent completely.
With aphasia, the speech center in the brain is damaged
The cause of aphasia is damage to the speech center in the brain. It can also be triggered by a craniocerebral trauma in an accident or a tumor. With the help of intensive speech therapy with a speech therapist, unaffected areas of the brain can take over the functions of the disturbed areas. Doctors recommend therapy as soon as possible.
Relatives are advised to be respectful and patient in dealing with those affected in order to avoid frustration.
