With her, another celebrity is on the exclusive guest list of the fashion event of the year: US professional basketball player Brittney Griner (32) is scheduled to appear at the Met Gala on Monday (May 1). A source told Page Six.
The WNBA player herself has not yet confirmed this. For her, however, it would be one of the biggest public appearances since her release from Russian custody in early December 2022. Most recently, she was also at the “White House Correspondents’ Dinner” in Washington, D.C. present, where she met US President Joe Biden (80) and First Lady Jill Biden (71). She captured the moment with a photo on Instagram.
Griner was arrested on February 17, 2022 when she entered Russia at Sheremetyevo Airport because she had a small amount of hash oil in her luggage. She was sentenced to nine years in prison on charges of illegal drug possession and smuggling. In December 2022, Griner was released after the US reached an agreement with Russia on a prisoner swap.
Just a few days ago, she spoke in tears at a press conference about her return. “Hard times are no stranger to me,” Griner explained to a journalist when asked how she got through the experiences. “One faces adversity in life. It was quite a big one. I relied on my hard work to get through it.” In prison, she never lost hope and tried to focus on what was to come.
The Met Gala takes place this Monday in New York City. Hundreds of invited celebrities will then once again walk the famous red carpet of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in unusual outfits. In 2023, the museum will honor the works of the late designer Karl Lagerfeld (1933-2019).
