Boy George (61) wanted to participate in “I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!” escape four times. The singer now revealed this to the newspaper “The Mirror” about his time in the British version of “I’m a star – get me out of here!”. The 80s icon was part of the 22nd season of the jungle camp in November. George was chosen as the fourth contestant from the show.
The former Culture Club singer repeatedly forced the producers to adjust the circumstances on the set. He once threatened to go on strike when he couldn’t get fresh socks. The makers gave in. Even when Boy George complained about the quality of the water, they caved in and installed a filter. The water tasted like “wood and fire,” George said. In order to get his way, Boy George put down his microphone several times, which the participants are actually forbidden to do.
The biggest scandal came when the singer, who was suffering from asthma, was supposed to run back to the camp after a jungle test. He pointed out that a younger co-candidate was driven by car and accused the makers of violating their duty of care. George then sat in a wheelbarrow and went on strike. When he didn’t get his way, he locked himself in a shed. There he started “to sing, to laugh and to cry”. Only then did those responsible give in and drove him to the camp.
In the end, Boy George is proud that he has not left the jungle camp despite the many disputes. He was already aware that he was prone to threats. “I spent the whole ’80s saying I’m leaving Culture Club,” he joked.
