Stars like the actresses Penélope Cruz and Nicole Kidman as well as former tennis pro Roger Federer celebrated the German star designer Karl Lagerfeld posthumously with elegant gala outfits in New York’s Metropolitan Museum. For around five hours on Monday evening (local time), she and other stars walked over a beige, red and blue carpet that had been laid out over the front steps of the famous Central Park Museum in Manhattan.
The dress code included fashion designed by or reminiscent of Lagerfeld. The chief host of the benefit gala was again Anna Wintour, head of the US fashion magazine “Vogue”.
The event, peppered with star guests, traditionally takes place on the first Monday in May. Often dubbed the “Party of the Year,” the Met Ball is an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute. The income, estimated at several million dollars, forms the annual budget of the institute, which is now named after Wintour.
This year, the gala opened an exhibition about fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who died in 2019. Around 150 works by the Hamburg-born designer can be seen in the “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” show.
