Roman Sörgel is dead. The Nuremberg comedian, who became known beyond the borders of Franconia under the stage name Bembers, died on January 8, 2023. His band “Wassd scho? Bassd scho!” announced his death via Facebook. Sörgel was 56 years old.
The cause of death is not yet officially known. According to the news portal “Nordbayern”, which refers to “consistent reports”, it is said to have been “multiple organ failure after a short illness”. “He just fell over and couldn’t be revived,” quoted the “Bayerische Rundfunk” as saying Sörgel’s bandmate Benno Baum.
In 1998, Roman Sörgel founded the band “Wassd scho? Bassd scho!” as a singer. The group’s specialties were cover versions of well-known songs in Franconian idiom and with funny lyrics. The band performed at Rock im Park and Rock am Ring, among others.
In addition, the graduate graphic designer made a name for himself as the art character Bembers on YouTube. In 2011, his viewing figures rose into the millions. As a rough Metalhead Bembers, Sörgel not only appeared regularly on television (“Cabaret from Franconia”), but also at the Wacken Metal Festival. In 2018 he had a guest appearance in the Franken crime scene “I kill nobody”.
In September 2022, Bambers announced on its website that it wanted to step down – because of a “nervous breakdown”. My fuse blew out completely a few days ago and my brain is only running on emergency power,” he wrote, canceling shows. “Sorry – I need a fu
