On July 14, Christoph Formberg and Susanne Bischof would have celebrated their first wedding anniversary. But the couple was not allowed to experience this date together: Susanne Bischof died shortly after the wedding. The cancer patient said yes to her partner in the palliative care ward – in an “emergency marriage”, as the Starnberg Clinic now, a year later, reports.
At the end of 2021, Susanne Bischof was diagnosed with breast cancer. The first treatments and chemotherapy seemed to work well, but the disease came back. On July 13, 2022, she came to the palliative care ward of the Starnberg Clinic – where the primary concern is to enable the patient to die with dignity. For Bischof, that meant she wanted to marry her partner on her deathbed.
The hospital staff did everything they could to make her wish come true. On the morning of July 14, the head doctor called the registry office and described the situation. The registrar, in turn, organized all the necessary documents within a few hours and carried out the wedding ceremony at the hospital bed in the afternoon. A nurse took on the role of maid of honor.
Her last wish came true, just seven hours after saying yes, Susanne Bischof died. She passed away peacefully at the age of 50, according to the hospital’s press release. “You can’t imagine a nicer death,” her newly wed husband is quoted as saying.
The couple from Schongau in Upper Bavaria met in 2015 – “very old-fashioned”, as Christoph Formberg says, namely at an event for professional reorientation. He just sat down next to his future partner. After that, the two phoned more often at first, then met again in person – and a little later, the Rhinelander Formberg moved to Bavaria for love. “Together we enjoyed life to the fullest and made plans,” recalls the 61-year-old. However, the wedding did not come about because of the corona pandemic – all the better that Christoph Formberg and Susanne Bischof were still able to officially seal their love together at the end of their lives.
