The Cologne band AnnenMayKantereit has defended actions by climate activists such as the occupation of Lützerath or road blockades. “I think civil disobedience is legitimate. I understand that people stick to the streets,” guitarist Christopher Annen told the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger”.
“The disobedience also takes place at the political level, to be honest,” said Annen, referring to a judgment by the Federal Constitutional Court in April 2021, which obliged the legislature to regulate the reduction targets for greenhouse gas emissions for the period after 2030 in more detail. Steps to reduce emissions must therefore not be put off at the expense of the younger generation. “In many places, this is simply not adhered to,” said Annen.
At the beginning of January, the band gave a concert in front of activists near the lignite town of Lützerath, singing something like “Habeck, Habeck, you were ok, but then RWE came along”. Annen said he found it impressive how intensively the people there dealt with the issue of climate protection.
