James Cameron’s (68) latest blockbuster has reached another milestone. Not even a handful of films have been more successful at the international box office than “Avatar: The Way of Water”. In the meantime, the box office of the film with Sam Worthington (46) and Zoe Saldana (44) is 2.054 billion US dollars, as reported by the industry magazine “Variety”. The cinema hit “Avengers: Infinity War” (2.052 billion) has overtaken it and is now in fifth place among the most successful films in terms of box office.

Cameron proves that no other director can even come close to matching him in terms of box office. The predecessor “Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora”, which was also directed by the 68-year-old, took the undisputed first place with 2.92 billion. Another film by Cameron, “Titanic”, currently ranks third with 2.19 billion. Meanwhile, Marvel blockbuster Avengers: Endgame lingers in the two (2.79 billion) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens is in the four at 2.07 billion.

Just a few days ago “The Way of Water” broke through the two billion wall – and it shouldn’t be long before James Cameron’s new film earns another place. The industry portal “Deadline” assumes that the second part of the “Avatar” series will advance to fourth place in just a few days.

And it shouldn’t be the end of it for Cameron – no matter where “The Way of Water” can finally place itself. Three more films in the series are already planned. The third part has already been shot and is expected to hit the cinemas in December 2024.
