Guitars, lyrics and other belongings of “American Pie” singer Don McLean were auctioned off in New York on Friday (local time). A 1969 Martin 00-21 acoustic guitar, which McLean used to record his hit song Vincent (Starry, Starry Night), fetched a good $156,000. A valuable Rolex watch found a new owner for around $35,000, according to auction house Julien’s.
Among the more than 300 pieces were jewelry and clothing of folk-rock greatness. Part of the income should go to the musician’s foundation, which finances, among other things, homeless aid projects.
It was the start of a three-day rock ‘n’ roll auction. By Sunday evening (local time), over 1,500 pieces owned by musicians such as Kurt Cobain, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Prince, Amy Winehouse, Madonna and Lady Gaga will go under the hammer.
