Briton David Chipperfield receives this year’s Pritzker Prize for Architecture. “Subtle yet powerful, subdued yet elegant, he is a prolific architect who is radical in his restraint and demonstrates his reverence for history and culture,” the jury said on Tuesday. The Pritzker Prize is the most prestigious award in the architecture industry and is endowed with 100,000 dollars.
Chipperfield said, “I am so overwhelmed to receive this extraordinary honor and to be connected to the previous recipients who have all provided so much inspiration to the profession.” Chipperfield is best known in Germany for the renovation of the New National Gallery and the reconstruction of the New Museum.
Previous awardees have included Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Norman Foster and Peter Zumthor. Last year, the architect Francis Kéré, who was born in Burkina Faso in West Africa and lives in Berlin, was honored with the prize.
