Becky Mason and George Kelley have spent much of their lives together, dating for 19 years. But the two Americans from the state of Oklahoma never got married. Until shortly before Mason’s death.

Three years ago, Becky Mason was diagnosed with colon cancer. For years she and the doctors fought the cancer, but recently her condition has deteriorated dramatically. The kidneys were no longer working, it was becoming increasingly clear that the end was approaching for them. Doctors gave her only 24 to 72 hours to live. She was allowed to spend her last days at home. The couple finally decided to get married. The couple tied the knot on Betty Mason’s deathbed, a local TV station reports.

Mason died a little later, she was 69 years old. Her family announced her death “with great sadness and gratitude”: “She was surrounded by love and peace.” The couple met in 2004 – while dancing. At the time, both of them were not really looking for a serious relationship. But things turned out differently – and they spent the rest of their lives together. “One thing led to another, and 19 years later we’re here – and we’re getting married,” said George Kelley before his partner’s death.

He too suffered greatly from Becky’s illness. “If I could take care of her cancer to keep her alive, I would do it,” the 72-year-old said in an interview before her death. “I’ve tried to be as strong as I can for her. But it’s not easy. I’ve been her carer, her friend and her lover, and I will continue to be. Until she dies.”
