After Matthew McConaughey’s visit to the community, Rep. Tony Gonzales posted on Twitter: “Thank you Matthew for helping us heal our community.”
Matthew McConaughey has done all he can to help his community after the tragic shooting at Uvalde High School, Texas.
PEOPLE confirmed that the Academy Award winner, 52 years old, visited the community on Friday with Rep. Tony Gonzales after Tuesday’s massacre at Robb Elementary School, which resulted in 21 deaths, including 19 students and two adults. He met with the families and people affected by the tragedy during his visit, including parents who lost their children in the shooting.
Matthew, thank you for your help in healing our community. Uvalde was filled with smiles thanks to your visit. “See you soon, my friend,” Gonzales, 41 years old, posted on Twitter, sharing photos and a message of thanks.
McConaughey made the trip after sharing a sincere response to the attack. He wrote, “Once more, we have tragically proved that we are failing for the freedoms we enjoy.”
“This epidemic is manageable, and regardless of where you stand, we all know that we can do better. McConaughey said that we must do better. “It is imperative that we take action so that no parent will have to go through what Uvalde’s parents and others had to endure.”
He was born in Uvalde where he spent most of his childhood. Kay McCabe, his mother, taught at St. Philip’s Episcopal School about one mile from Robb Elementary.
President Joe Biden also spoke out about Tuesday’s shooting and expressed his disgust at the country’s continued gun violence.
He signed Wednesday’s executive order regarding policing, public safety, and advocated for common-sense gun reforms.
Biden stated, “As a nation we must all be there for them.” We must ask ourselves: “When in God’s Name will we do the right thing to stop the country from committing more carnage?”
Director of Texas Department of Public Safety stated that Pete Arredondo, Chief of Police, made the wrong decision in not confronting him more than 40 minutes after entering the school.
