“He is on another plane. It’s insane.”
Justin Bieber, pop star, has revealed that John Mayer, a pop-blues guitarist virtuoso, is his next record producer. He also praised his extraordinary guitar skills.
Bieber spoke to Apple Music’s Ebro darden about his upcoming album. It is the follow-up to Justice last year. He said: “John Mayer is involved in the project, which is pretty insane. I was blown away by the solo guitar playing. He is someone I have looked up to for a while.
He was at Henson’s studio, and I was working on a song. He came in, and I was like, “Yes, bro,” and then he came out to lay a solo on the guitar. It was amazing to be able to actually see his gift and to experience it in person.
Bieber said that Mayer’s playing was “incredible”.
As the record remains unannounced, there is no official date when Mayer will be able to contribute to Bieber’s album. Mayer has been reflecting on his 1999 hit Neon, which went viral on TikTok, and is now pondering the process.
He explained that suddenly, the song feels like a TikTok trick-shot video challenge song. “I feel kind of bad about this song because it was written when I was alone playing in bookstores and cafes and wanted people to pay attention,” he said. It’s a bit cynical, in that it’s almost a circus trick.
The trick is in the technique Mayer demonstrated in the viral video. He used his thumb and index finger to accomplish the trick. Some viewers have found the technique difficult to impossible, as Mayer admits on stage, “I feel sorry because I have thumbs that are a mile long.” Like the school kid who could flip his eyes inside out. This is sort of what it is. It’s one thing I can do.”
