Two people died in a major fire at an oil refinery in Russia. Five other people were injured in the accident in eastern Siberia, as the governor of the Irkutsk region, Igor Kobsev, announced on Thursday.

According to the authorities, the refinery in the city of Angarsk caught fire in the morning. Referring to the rescue services, Kobsev explained in the online service Telegram that the fire was probably caused by a gas leak. An investigation has been launched to see if there has been a breach of safety standards.

Fires have broken out in Russia in recent months, damaging shopping malls, factories and other facilities. Often the fires are caused by outdated equipment or non-compliance with regulations.

However, fear of attacks and acts of sabotage from Ukraine is also growing in Russia. Suspected Ukrainian drone strikes hit military bases in Russia. In the meantime, even Russian state television is discussing whether Ukraine can also reach Siberia with rockets.
