1. FC Union Berlin have called up their squad for the club’s premiere group stage in the Champions League. Midfielder Andras Schäfer and newcomers Benedict Hollerbach and Mikkel Kaufmann are not among the 24 selected players, as the Berliners announced on Thursday. The Hungarian shepherd has been injured for a long time and has not yet been able to play again. Hollerbach and Kaufmann have a lot of competition in attack. Union starts on September 20 with an away game at Real Madrid in the premier class. The other opponents are the Italian champions SSC Naples and SC Braga.
The Köpenickers only called up 24 instead of the maximum possible 25 players, as UEFA rules require four professionals to have been trained by the club between the ages of 15 and 21. At Union, these are only Yannic Stein, Laurenz Dehl and Aljoscha Kemlein.
