Activists from the environmental organization Greenpeace protested on Thursday against the start of laying a gas pipeline in the port of Mukran in the north of the island of Rügen.
According to Greenpeace, they laid down in three inflatable boats in front of one of the ships leaving the port that wanted to transport pipes for the planned pipeline. Climbers had attached a banner with the inscription “Gas destroyed” to the loading crane in the port. Greenpeace criticized that the pipeline should run through several marine protected areas.
The new pipeline, around 50 kilometers long, is to run from the port of Mukran on the island of Rügen, where liquefied natural gas (LNG) delivered by ship is to be converted back into gas, to Lubmin.
