Also this year, former US President Barack Obama (61) published a list of his favorite films of the past year. The 44th President of the United States has a tradition of letting his more than 133 million Twitter followers know which film productions he liked best over the past 12 months, with this year’s list coming to 17 titles in no apparent order. “I’ve seen some great movies this year – here are some of my favorites,” Obama wrote in his post.

The ex-president’s list includes only one mainstream blockbuster, Tom Cruise sequel Top Gun: Maverick. However, the Marvel sequel “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” did not make it into the list of Obama’s favorite films. The first part “Black Panther” had landed on Obama’s best list of 2018.

The film list contains a number of titles that have already been released in Germany. These include the multiverse mindfuck Everything Everywhere All at Once, the historical action drama The Woman King, the tragic comedy Aftersun, the French youth film Petite Maman, the French drama The Event “, the Spanish comedy “The Perfect Boss”, the Japanese anthology film “The Wheel of Fortune”, the Iranian-French feature film “A Hero – The Lost Honor of Mr. Soltani” and the sci-fi film “After Yang”, which is shown on Sky and is available on its streaming service Wow.

The documentary “The Descendants of the Slave Ship Clotilda” is already available on the Netflix streaming service. Filmmaker Margaret Brown’s work was produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s (58) production company Higher Ground Productions. Obama also notes this with the words “I am biased” next to the name of the film.

Other film titles recommended and praised by Obama are still awaiting release in German cinemas. These include Steven Spielberg’s (76) autobiographical work “The Fabelmans” (German theatrical release on March 9, 2023), “The Woman in the Fog” by art-house filmmaker Park Chan-wook (German theatrical release on February 2, 2023), the biography “Till – Kampf um die Truth” (German start date here is January 26, 2023) and the critically acclaimed music drama “Tár” with Oscar winner Cate Blanchett (53) in the leading role (German cinema start on March 2, 2023).

The Iranian road movie “Hit the Road” and the US thriller “Emily the Criminal” with Aubrey Plaza (38) in the leading role are currently without a release date in Germany.
