A famous Princess Diana dress is set to be auctioned in New York later this month. Designer Victor Gem’s strapless aubergine velvet dress could fetch up to 113,000 euros, Sotheby’s estimates when it comes under the hammer on January 27, the auction house said on its website.
According to British media, Diana wore the robe, which was decorated with three rhinestone buttons on the back, in 1991 for an official portrait and in 1997 for a photo shoot with star photographer Mario Testino.
“Diana’s dazzling style influenced everyday fashion choices in Britain and beyond,” wrote Sotheby’s. Even decades after her tragic death, Diana’s style is inspiring. The late princess’ dress was part of Gemstone’s fall 1989 collection. It was last sold to him at a charity auction in 1997, weeks before Diana’s accidental death, for the equivalent of around 23,000 euros – along with dozens of other dresses from Diana’s collection.
Diana, mother of William and Harry and ex-wife of Charles, died in a car accident in Paris on the night of August 31, 1997 at the age of 36. To this day, she has many fans worldwide as the “Queen of Hearts”.
