“Avatar – The Way of Water” continues its triumphal march at the box office. The science fiction adventure by director James Cameron has moved up to fifth place in the world rankings of the most commercially successful films, as reported by US trade journals.
According to this, “Avatar 2” has now grossed 2.054 billion dollars worldwide since its theatrical release in mid-December. In the charts, the film overtook “Avengers: Infinity War”, which had grossed around $ 2.052 billion since 2018 and was currently at number 5.
The top spot in the world rankings is still firmly in the hands of director Cameron. In first place was “Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora” from 2009 with a gross of 2.92 billion dollars. In second place is the blockbuster “Avengers: Endgame” (2019) with revenues of around $2.79 billion, followed by Cameron’s “Titanic” (1997) with worldwide revenues of $2.19 billion. 2015’s “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens” ranked fourth at $2.07 billion. According to industry forecasts, “Avatar 2” could soon overtake its “Star Wars” rival.
In 2017, Cameron began working on four “Avatar” sequels at the same time, with the remaining parts to follow from 2024. Starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Kate Winslet and Sigourney Weaver, “Avatar: The Way of Water” is nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Visual Effects.
