Alexander Bommes’ break has been going on for a few months now. First, the ARD moderator had to cancel the World Cup in Qatar at short notice, then he was also absent from the Handball World Cup in January. Health problems were the reasons both times, as the broadcaster stated.
But now the 46-year-old seems to be doing better – his comeback on TV screens is imminent. This was confirmed by the ARD of the “image”. “The ‘Sportschau’ is currently planning again with Alexander Bommes from March,” explained the broadcaster, but left a back door open: If Bommes was not fit at the time, other moderators would take over the programs. The ARD had already practiced this in the past few months.
Bommes was unable to broadcast a handball game on November 19 after having to stop a rehearsal due to health problems. Since then, the former Bundesliga handball player has not been seen on television. In addition to sports programs, he usually also hosts the quiz show “Gefraget, gejagt”. He justified his cancellation of the World Cup with “a series of infections”. He failed to get fit again in time.
In January, Bommes also had to pass for the Handball World Cup in Poland and Sweden: “After a year in which I, like many people, had to accept some health restrictions, I want to complete further recovery,” he justified his decision. His colleagues Esther Sedlaczek and Jessy Wellmer are currently representing him in the “Sportschau” moderation.
It is still unclear exactly when Bommes will be making his comeback on the sports show or when the new episodes of “Asked, hunted” will be recorded. The moderations in the “Sportschau” have already been booked until March 5th, after which Bommes could return to the camera – provided his health allows it.
