A tough struggle for third place in the list of the most successful films of all time has been decided in favor of “Avatar: The Way of Water” for the time being. The sequel to “Avatar” pushed ahead of “Titanic” for the first time and thus took third place, as the listing on the “Box Office Mojo” page shows.
James Cameron (68) has thus defeated himself – both strips are credited to the blockbuster director. “The Way of Water” now comes to around 2.245 billion US dollars, “Avengers: Endgame” continues to rank unassailably in second place with almost 2.8 billion US dollars. Cameron’s “Avatar” from 2009 remains the frontrunner, which, at just over 2.9 billion US dollars, was able to rake in more money than any other film.
The race had become exciting again recently because “Titanic” had come to the cinema again on the occasion of the 25th anniversary. It is also not yet certain that “Avatar 2” will be able to defend its place: According to the industry website, the two works are currently separated by just over a million US dollars at the international box office. However, the trend over the past few days indicates that “Titanic” could have run out of air a little earlier.
In another statistic, “Avatar: The Way of Water” is enthroned at the top: The blockbuster has made 129 million euros in sales at the box office in Germany in just 68 days, making it currently the highest-grossing film in Germany. This was announced by the manager of the Walt Disney Company in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, Roger Crotti. At the same time, a 25-year-old record was broken – that of “Titanic”.
In terms of the number of German cinema-goers, however, the film with Kate Winslet (47) and Leonardo DiCaprio (48) is (still) ahead. The reason for this is the rise in ticket prices in recent years and the surcharge for cinema films in 3D.
