With the Teddy Awards, important secondary prizes at the Berlinale were presented on Friday evening. The winners in the Perspektive Deutsches Kino and Generation 14plus categories were also announced.

At the Teddy Awards, the international jury reviews films with a queer context from all sections of the film festival. Three films are then nominated in each category.

The Teddy for Best Feature Film went to the Nigerian production All the Colors of the World Are Between Black and White by Babatunde Apalowo. It is about the approach of two men in a society that taboos same-sex sexual relationships.

Special teddy for the Molodist film festival

“Orlando, ma biographie politique” by Paul Preciado received the award for best documentary. The director’s work is based on Virginia Woolf’s novel “Orlando” about a young man who ends up being a 36-year-old woman. The film tells the story of many different people from 8 to 70 years of age around the world who have gone through such a transformation.

Matthew Thorne and Derik Lynch’s Marungka Tjalatjunu (Dipped in Black) won Best Short Film. The jury’s Teddy Award went to “Silver Haze” by Sacha Polak. A special teddy went to the directors of the Molodist film festival in Kiev, Andriy Khaalpakhchi and Bohdan Zhuk.

There were also awards in the Berlinale section Perspektive Deutsches Kino. The Kompass-Perspektive award for the best film, worth 5,000 euros, went to Steffi Niederzoll for “Sieben Winters in Tehran”. It tells the story of a young woman who resists institutionalized male violence.

Silvia Del Carmen Castaños and Estefanía Contreras from the USA were able to secure the EUR 7,500 prize from the international jury in the Generation 14plus section for the best film for “Hummingbirds”.
