Female artists have been particularly successful in the 2023 British singles charts. They took the top spot in 31 out of 52 weeks either alone or in music projects with other artists, the PA news agency reported, citing music industry association the British Phonographic Industry. There have never been so many weeks since the survey began in 1952.

US singer Miley Cyrus was at number one for ten weeks with her song “Flowers”. For example, Ellie Goulding with Calvin Harris (“Miracle”), Doja Cat (“Paint The Town Red”), Kenya Grace (“Strangers”), Taylor Swift (“It’s Over Now”) and Billie Eilish also made it to the top (“What Was I Made For”).

“Women have spent more weeks at number one on the official singles charts than in any other year,” said association boss Jo Twist. She warned against complacency and called for further work to be done to ensure the representation of women in the industry. Overall, 48.5 percent of the songs that made it into the British top ten in 2023 featured female artists.
