The BBC documentary “Charles III: The Coronation Year”, which looked behind the scenes of the British royal family, was not well received by all viewers. After broadcasting on Boxing Day, 897 complaints were received about an “overly positive” portrayal. This was reported by the “Daily Mail”, among others.

The viewers accuse the makers of the show of having a “bias in favor of the monarchy”. No other format received more so-called first level complaints in the period from December 18th to 31st, the newspaper wrote. However, BBC argued it was a “unique observational documentary covering a period of historical significance”. It sought to “reflect a range of viewpoints in coverage of the monarchy in news and current affairs” and in other programs “examined the structures and finances surrounding the royal family.”

The documentary about the coronation year, on the other hand, is a “unique approach” and captures “personal moments as the king gets used to his new role.” Produced by Oxford Films, the camera team accompanied, among others, King Charles (75) and Queen Camilla (76) as they prepared for the service in Westminster Abbey on May 6, 2023.
