Sewing is one of those occupations that are both productive and creative. Discover a new side of yourself and learn how to easily sew clothes, accessories and gifts yourself. You can find out here what tools you need to get started.
As with any hobby, sewing requires different things. Especially at the beginning, you rarely have these utensils at hand because they are used specifically for sewing. This also applies to a practical measuring tape with colored decimeter zones.
Once you have chosen a sewing project, you will also need to select and cut the fabric. Conventional scissors are not sharp enough to cut different materials precisely, so you need sharp fabric scissors.
Needles are at the top of the list of sewing must-haves. Since needles are small and narrow, a pin cushion is recommended so that no needles can be lost. Pin cushions that can be attached to the wrist are best suited. So they are always ready to hand and no more needles are lost.
It may sound contradictory, but whoever sews must also be able to separate. Not every seam is perfect, so a good seam ripper is indispensable, especially for beginners.
Each seam needs a mark beforehand, this is the only way you can be sure that the seam will then sit properly. Tailor’s chalk helps to make marks on the material that can be easily removed. This chalk pen is very precise but can quickly fade if the fabric is moved a lot. Alternatively, there’s this classic tailor’s chalk, which is less precise but leaves long-lasting marks.
These clamps are recommended to fix the material without piercing it with needles. They are a good alternative to classic needles and are particularly suitable for materials such as leather because the material is not damaged.
When sewing, you can’t avoid one aspect, because you have to neaten all the raw edges. This will ensure that the seams look clean and last a long time. A simple alternative to the sewing machine zigzag stitch is pinking shears. It has triangular teeth that can cut a zigzag pattern. This way you can avoid fabric bulges at seams and frayed edges.
You need a few supplies to sew, which means you need a handy place to store everything. A classic sewing box is best suited for this.
As soon as it goes beyond darning socks or simply mending clothing, a sewing machine is recommended. In the beginning, it takes practice and you have to find your own pace to use it properly, but over time you will understand and be able to use all the advantages of the sewing machine.
Not only exercise videos on the net are suitable for learning to sew, but also books. This book explains the most important basics and tips as well as sewing techniques in a clear and understandable manner in words and pictures.
Do not despair, because as a sewing beginner, the first seams are usually not that clean and often have to be unpicked. To begin with, use sheets of paper for practice rather than fabric. In particular, sewing back and forth to close the seam requires practice and can be improved with such sheets of paper.
